Peter Baines accumulated more than two decades of experience in the NSW Police Force, leading teams in response to acts of terrorism and natural disasters on a scale unimaginable from the every day.   Peter was part of the team which responded to the Bali bombings in 2002 and led international identification teams following the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.

Peter was deeply touched by the loss of life and number of children orphaned after the devastating Boxing Day Tsunami.  This scale of devastation and number of children left abandoned inspired Peter to set up an organisation that could make a difference in their lives. And since 2005, Hands Across the Water has raised several million dollars, built two orphanages, purchased a rubber plantation (to provide regular income) and is currently constructing a medical and community centre in the Khao Lak region of Thailand.

Peter’s story and experiences are both emotional and powerful.  Not least for the phenomenal circumstances faced, but chain of events which followed and his actions to think of the future for the children and communicates so deeply affected by this disaster in Thailand.
